iOS Automatic Updates

Using Jamf School, you can control how and when iOS updates are applied. Update support and requirements depend on the iOS version of the device.

iOS 10.3 or later: Updates are supported on all supervised devices, including those with a passcode. Devices not enrolled via Automated Device Enrollment (formerly DEP) will be prompted to accept Terms and Conditions.

iOS 9–10.2: Only devices enrolled via Automated Device Enrollment can be updated using Jamf School. Devices not enrolled via Automated Device Enrollment will report their update status, but cannot be forced to download or install an update.

Note: Jamf School prompts to automatically clear a device passcode when present at the time of sending an update command to the device.

  • iOS 9 or later

  • Supervised

  • Enrolled via Automated Device Enrollment (devices with iOS 9–10.2)

  • (Optional) Apple Caching server

Enabling Automatic Update Checking

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Organization > Settings > General.

  2. Select the Automatically check for iOS updates checkbox.

  3. Click Save.

Checking for Updates

By default, the devices will be checked for updates every hour (with the hourly “device update”). You can speed up this process by navigating to the device details and clicking the Refresh button.

Viewing Available Updates

New updates are automatically visible in Jamf School on the Devices > Updates page.

You can decide what to do with an update on a per-device basis, or update all at once with the “bulk” options. There are two options you can choose from:

  • Download only: The update is downloaded, but will not be installed automatically.

  • Download & Install: The update will be downloaded and installed as soon as possible.
