Manually Connecting to an 802.1X Network on a Mobile Device

Manually connecting to an 802.1X network can be used to observe the following:

  • The ability to connect to the network without using a configuration profile from Jamf Pro

  • The ability to view the certificate trust prompt coming from the RADIUS server's certificate

To manually connect to an 802.1X network, do the following:

  1. Go to Settings, tap Wi-Fi, and then tap the desired network.

  2. If you have a hidden network, tap Other, and then enter the name of the network.

  3. Tap Security, tap the WPA2 Enterprise option, and then tap the Other Network link to go back.

  4. Enter your credentials in the Username and Password fields, and then tap Join.

  5. You are promoted to confirm that you want to trust the certificate that the RADIUS server is using. If the certificate or certificate authority is already trusted on the device, this prompt does not display. Tap More Details to view more certificate information.

On the Details pane, you can see the Common Name of the certificate and identify who issued the certificate. This information is helpful when requesting the certificates in .cer or .p12 format.

  6. Tap Certificate, and then tap Trust. The device will finish joining the network, and a blue checkmark is displayed next to the 802.1X network SSID indicating the connection has been established.
