Migrating Volume Purchase Program Accounts to Apps and Books in Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager

If your organization uses legacy Volume Purchase Program (VPP) accounts, you must migrate to Apps and Books in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager. The Volume Purchase Program will no longer be available starting December 1, 2020. For more information, see the following article from Apple's support website: https://support.apple.com/HT209617.

Migrating Purchased Content

This process migrates each VPP account to its own location in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager. The legacy VPP account in Jamf Pro will not be deleted. It is important you do not download the token for any of these locations until all the steps are complete.
Note:

Multiple VPP accounts cannot be merged to the same location, and new Jamf Pro VPP accounts cannot be created using an Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager location.

Requirements
  • An Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager account

  • A Jamf Pro user account with the "Update" privileges for Jamf Pro's VPP Server object

  1. Log in to Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.
  2. (Optional) Click Locations and create a new location for each VPP account and unique purchaser.
  3. Edit each Content Manager as needed so each Content Manager only has one unique location.
  4. Have each Content Manager log in to Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager using their VPP credentials.
  5. Navigate to Content > Apps and Books.
  6. Click Migrate. The purchased content is migrated to the selected location. When migration is complete, all licenses will display in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager without any changes being made to the Jamf Pro VPP token.
  7. When the migration is complete, you can move licenses to different locations as needed. This is only necessary if there are multiple locations configured.

Purchasing Apps and Books

  1. Log in to Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.
  2. Click Apps and Books.
  3. Select the app in the search results list you want to purchase. You have to "purchase" free apps, but there is no charge.
  4. Choose the location where the licenses will be initially assigned.
  5. Enter the number of licenses and change the payment method as needed.
  6. Click Buy.

Renewing a Token in Apps and Books

  1. Log in to Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Apps and Books.
  3. In the My Server Tokens section, click Download.
  4. In Jamf Pro, navigate to Settings > Global Management > VPP Account.
  5. Select the desired VPP account.
  6. Click Details, and then click Edit.
  7. Click Renew Service Token and upload the location token you previously downloaded.
  8. Click Save.
Note:

If there are multiple locations configured in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, you will download each unique renewed location's service token and upload it to its matching VPP account by logging into Jamf Pro and navigating to Settings > Global Management > VPP Account.
