You can create and manage mobile device and computer web clips using profiles Jamf School.

Creating and Managing Computer Web Clips

You can add web clips to computers in Jamf School by creating a script with the web clip, distributing the packaged script, and configuring the web clip to appear on the Dock by using a profile.
Note:

You cannot distribute web clips to computers using the Web Clips payload in a profile in Jamf School.

Creating a Web Clip Script

  1. Open Script Editor.
  2. Click File and select New.
  3. Enter the following in the Script Editor:
    tell application “Safari”
    activate
    open location “http://www.yourwebcliplink.com/”
    end tell
  4. Click Play to test the script.
  5. Click File > Export.
  6. Enter a name and location for the script and select Application as the File Format.
  7. Click Save.
  8. To change the Web Clip icon image, right-click the file you just exported, and then select Get Info.
  9. Select the image in the top-left corner and paste a new image.

After the web clip script is created, you must package and distribute the script to computers. For more information, see Packages and In-House Content Distribution.

Configuring the Web Clip in the Dock

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Profiles in the sidebar.
  2. Click + Create Profile.
  3. Select the operating system you want to make the profile for or select Upload Custom Profile.
  4. Select User Enrollment.
  5. Enter a name in the Profile name field and configure the additional settings as needed, including the removal policy and time filter.
  6. Click Finish.
  7. To configure the profile settings, click the profile you want to configure.
  8. Use the Scope payload to configure the scope of the profile by clicking the + icon and adding device groups to the profile scope.
  9. Use the Dock payload to configure basic settings for the web clip, including the following:
    1. In the Dock Apps field, enter the file path to the script you packaged.
      Example:

      /Applications/example.app

    2. Select the Merge with Users’s Dock checkbox.
  10. Click Save.

Creating and Managing Mobile Device Web Clips

When managing web clips, keep the following in mind:

  • Users can always create web clips.

  • You can prevent users from removing web clips by disabling the Allow removing apps checkbox in restriction settings.

    Note:

    When a layout is configured, users cannot remove web clips regardless of this restriction.

  • When safelisting or blocklisting apps, you can allow or restrict all web clips. For more information, see Configuring a Web Content Filter Profile for Mobile Devices.

Requirements
  • Shared iPads with iOS 11.3 or later

  • Mobile devices with iOS 11.2 or earlier

Note:

Web clips configured on these devices cannot be saved to the Home screen.

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Profiles in the sidebar.
  2. Click + Create Profile.
  3. Select the operating system you want to make the profile for or select Upload Custom Profile.
  4. Select the type of enrollment you want to make the profile for.
  5. Enter a name in the Profile name field and configure the additional settings as needed, including the removal policy and time filter.
  6. Click Finish.
  7. To configure the profile settings, click the profile you want to configure.
  8. Use the Scope payload to configure the scope of the profile by clicking the + icon and adding device groups to the profile scope.
  9. Use the Web Clips payload to configure the basic settings, including the label (name), URL, and icon.
    Note:

    If you want the web clip to open in Chrome, use "googlechrome://" before the address. For example: googlechrome://www.example.com/. If you want the web clip to open in Firefox, use "firefox://" before the address. For example: firefox://www.example.com/. If you want the web clip to open in Puffin, use "puffin://" before the address. For example: puffin://www.example.com/.

  10. Click Save.
