Using Apple's Classroom App and Jamf School Teacher

Apple's Classroom app and Jamf School Teacher are both apps that teachers can use to manage student's school-issued devices. Each app has a different feature set. You can choose to distribute one or both apps, depending on the needs of your environment.

1. Teachers can only allow students to use one app or website at a time.
2. Teachers can allow students to use multiple apps and websites at a time.
3. Teachers can also display an Attention message.

Requirements

To distribute Apple's Classroom app to teacher devices and allow teachers to manage student devices with Apple's Classroom app, the devices and your infrastructure must meet the applicable requirements in the Classroom requirements article from Apple's support website.

Configuring Classes in Jamf School

Before teachers can use the Apple's Classroom app, you must configure classes in Jamf School. Students must be assigned to a class with at least one teacher who is assigned to a one-to-one iPad or Mac computer. In addition, iPads enabled as a Shared iPad and Mac computers must also be added to the class. For more information on how to configure a class, see Configuring Classes.

Configuring Classroom App Settings

You can configure some Apple's Classroom app settings in Jamf School.

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Organization > Settings in the sidebar.

  2. Click the Apple Classroom payload.

  3. (Optional) To only allow teachers to use classes configured in Jamf School, select the Automatically configure Apple Classroom based on Classes and Users in Jamf School checkbox.

  4. (Optional) To install the Classroom app for local computer users, select the Configure Classroom on macOS for all local users automatically checkbox.

  5. (Optional) To allow teachers to view student device screens using the Classroom app, select the Allow Screen Observation Permission Modification checkbox.

  6. Click Save.

Use Jamf School to distribute Apple’s Classroom app to the teacher devices in your environment.

Distributing Apps and Packages to Groups

After adding apps and packages to Jamf School, you can distribute content to devices by scoping it to device groups.

  1. In Jamf School, click Apps in the sidebar.

  2. Click Apps.

  3. Select the checkboxes next to the apps and packages you want to distribute.

  4. Click Edit Scope.

  5. Enter one or more device groups you want to distribute the content to in the Scope field.

  6. Choose one of the following installation methods from the Install Type pop-up menu:

    • To install the app or package on devices automatically, choose Change to automatic installation for all groups.

    • To allow users to install the app or package themselves, choose Change to on-demand installation for all groups.

  7. Choose the assignment method from the VPP Assign Method pop-up menu.

  8. Click Save.

The app or package is available on the devices the next time they check in with Jamf School.

Jamf School Teacher

Requirements

To configure Jamf School Teacher, you need:

Configuring Jamf School Teacher Settings

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Organization > Settings in the sidebar.

  2. Use the Jamf School Student payload to configure management settings in the Features section.

  3. Click Save.

  4. Use the Jamf School Teacher payload to configure settings and management capabilities.

  5. Click Save.

Distributing the Jamf School Teacher App

You can distribute the Jamf School Teacher app by adding the app from the App Store to Jamf School or by purchasing it through Apps and Books in Apple School Manager. If teachers do not see Jamf School Teacher on their device after it is distributed, make sure that the settings configured in Organization > Settings > Jamf School Teacher do not conflict with the settings applied to the teacher user account.

Teachers are automatically logged in to Jamf School Teacher on devices they are assigned to. If they are not assigned to the device, teachers can log in to Jamf School Teacher by using their user account credentials or by navigating to the Jamf School Teacher web application. The Jamf School Teacher web application URL is the full URL for the Jamf School server followed by “/teacher”. For example: https://schoolname.jamfcloud.com/teacher
