User-Based App Assignment

This article will focus on using the managed distribution model to distribute and re-claim VPP licenses through the Jamf School Management System. With managed distribution, users are invited to receive VPP apps through their Apple ID. This license can be revoked at any point, and transferred to another user.

Requirements

  • VPP requires at least iOS 7

  • Each user must have an personal Apple ID to receive managed distribution apps. This licensed Apple ID must then be signed in on the iOS device in order to receive VPP apps.

Adding a Volume Purchasing Account to Jamf School

  1. To start, download the Volume Purchasing Token from the Account Summary page on Apple’s VPP site.

  2. In Jamf School, navigate to Organization > Settings > VPP.

  3. Click Configure VPP.

  4. Upload the token you’ve downloaded from the VPP site.

  5. Click Save Settings.

Adding Apps to Your Volume Purchasing Account

You first have to buy apps or books via the VPP site, all the purchases will automatically show up in Jamf School. To do so:

  1. Login at Apple’s VPP site with your organization’s volume purchasing account.

  2. Search for the desired app or book and click on the name of the app or book.

  3. Enter the amount of licenses you want to buy in the Quantity field and, if it’s a paid app, select Managed Distribution.

  4. Click the Review Order button.
    The purchased licenses will automatically show up in Jamf School within 10 minutes under the “Apps” or “Documents” section based on the type of purchase.

Inviting Users

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Users & Groups > Overview.

  2. Search for the user you want to invite to VPP.

  3. Click the + Invite User button.

  4. Click the Send Invite button to send the invite to the users e-mail address.

Viewing Invitation Status

Invited users will receive a notification on their device or an e-mail depending on the invitation method you’ve chosen. Accepting the invitation will require the user to sign in with their iTunes account, and accept Apple’s VPP terms and conditions.

To view the invitation status:

  • In Jamf School, navigate to Users & Groups > Overview.

  • Users with the VPP Status “Associated” have accepted the invitation and are able to receive VPP licenses.

Deploying Apps and Grant VPP Licenses

Apps purchased through VPP will automatically show up in Jamf School. Depending of the type of purchase, this can be either under “Apps” or “Documents”.

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Apps or Documents based on your needs.

  2. Search the VPP App or Book you want to distribute and click on the name.

  3. You can see how many licenses are purchased and how many are still available.

  4. You can let Jamf School automatically manage your licenses. Users who are in scope will automatically receive an licenses are revoked from user that become out of scope;

  5. Define who will receive the VPP app, by defining an scope.

  6. Click Save App.

Revoking VPP Licenses

In order to re-claim a license, the user’s app license must be revoked. A license can be revoked for a specific app, or a user’s access to all licensed apps can be revoked.

As per Apple’s policies, a revoked user will be granted a 30-day grace period before any re-claimed apps are removed from the user’s purchase history. Once a license has been revoked for one user, it will be available for applying to another user.

Revoke a single license from a user:

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to User & Groups > Overview.

  2. Search for the users that has the license you want to revoke and click on the name.

  3. Click on the “VPP Licenses” app.

  4. Click the revoke license button of the app you want to revoke.

Revoke all licenses from a user:

Retiring a user account reclaims any assigned licenses and disassociates it from your VPP account.

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to User & Groups > Overview.

  2. Search for the users that has the license you want to revoke and click on the name.

  3. Click the Retire user button.
