Synchronization

Synchronization allows you to sync data from Apple School Manager or Somtoday with Jamf School. Using synchronization, you can import users, classes, and location from Apple School Manager to Jamf School. You also have the option of using one-way or two-way synchronization. With one-way synchronization configured, information is only synched from Apple School Manager to Jamf School. With two-way synchronization configured, information is synched from Apple School Manager to Jamf School and from Jamf School to Apple School Manager.

Requirements

To synchronize information with Apple School Manager, you must integrate Jamf School with Apple School Manager. For more information, see Integrating Jamf School with Apple School Manager.

Syncing with Apple School Manager

Before synchronizing data from Apple School Manager to Jamf School, you must configure the synchronization settings to sync one-way or two-way.

Configuring Synchronization Settings

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Organization > Settings in the sidebar.

  2. In the Apple School Manager settings section, click the payload with the Apple ID you use for Apple School Manager.

  3. Use the payload to configure the synchronization settings.

Note: If you are configuring two-way synchronization, it is recommended that you deselect the Creating missing users and Creating missing classes checkboxes to prevent users and classes from being added to Jamf School before the sync is completely configured. After you configure the SFTP settings, you can enable this.

  4. Click Save.
    One-way synchronization is now configured.

  5. (Two-way synchronization only) Use the Apple School Manager SFTP payload to configure basic settings, including selecting the Enable option to upload users to Apple School Manager through SFTP checkbox, and then click Save.

Note: After two-way synchronization is configured, it is recommended that you manually sync using the "Synching Manually" section in this article and fix any errors that occur.

Configuring Automatic Synchronization

After configuring one-way or two-way synchronization settings, you can configure the automatic synchronization settings for Apple School Manager. If you only want to synchronize apps, books, or devices purchased through Apple School Manager, you do not need to configure these settings because apps, books, and devices are automatically synced every 24 hours.

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Organization > Settings in the sidebar.

  2. In the Apple School Manager settings section, use the Synchronization payload to configure the synchronization time from the Automatic synchronization settings pop-up menu.

  3. Click Save.

Synching with an LDAP directory service allows you to import users and groups from a LDAP directory service to Jamf School. For more information, see Synchronizing an LDAP Directory Service with Jamf School.
