Distributing Books Purchased with Apple School Manager to Users

Integrating with volume purchasing (formerly VPP) is the first step to using managed distribution. To distribute content purchased in volume, you must first add one or more locations to Jamf School.

When you add a location to Jamf School, you upload the service token that you obtained from Apple, and specify the country associated with the location. You can also specify other information about the account, such as the contact person and Apple ID.

In addition, you can specify that all content purchased in volume is populated in the catalogs.

Volume Purchasing Service Token Considerations

Consider the following when adding locations to Jamf School:

  • To avoid issues with content scoping and renewal dates, it is recommended that you do not configure multiple locations for the same distribution content.

  • Each service token for the specific distributed content should only be allocated once. For example, if the service token you want to upload already exists in Apple's Profile Manager, delete the service token from Apple's Profile Manager before uploading it to Jamf School. This limitation includes a single server instance.

    Note: If you are using a Jamf School trial instance and have a service token in another MDM, create a new service token in Apple School Manager and upload that token to your Jamf School trial instance. When you purchase Jamf School licenses, you can delete the service token from the other MDM.

  • If you upload a new token file to renew distributed content licenses, it is recommended that you do not delete the expired location from Jamf School before uploading the new server token file.

  • If you configured a location for your distributed content licenses and later integrated your environment with Apple School Manager, it is recommended that you do not add a separate location for these licenses.
    Use the "Renew Service Token" button on the location Details tab to upload the new token (.vpptoken) that you acquired from Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager. This will allow Location to display for your Apple School Manager token in Jamf School. When prompted, reclaim the service token to use it with your Jamf School instance.

    Note: It is recommended that you only use one Apple School Manager account to integrate with volume purchasing. Using more than one account makes it difficult to isolate the account causing the issues when troubleshooting.

  • Deleting a location removes the instance from Jamf Pro but does not delete the settings in Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager.

General Requirements

To distribute books purchased using Apple School Manager to users, you need:

  • Users with a Managed Apple ID assigned to the location token uploaded to Jamf School

  • Apple School Manager synchronization configured with Invite users to register with volume purchasing enabled. For more information, see Synchronization.

Uploading the Service Token to Jamf School


To distribute apps with Apple School Manager, you must first transfer content licenses to a location and download the service token. For more information on transferring licenses to Apple School Manager, see the Apple School Manager User Guide. After assigning apps to a location, you can navigate to Settings > Apps and Books in Apple School Manager to download the service token.


Once you have downloaded the token from Apple School Manager, you can add apps and books to Jamf School by uploading the token to Jamf School.

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Organization > Settings in the sidebar.

  2. Select the Content (Volume Purchasing) payload.

  3. Click Add Service Token, and then upload the token you downloaded.

  4. Click Apply.

  5. Click Edit images/download/thumbnails/85393633/Screen_Shot_2019-04-30_at_2.33.11_PM.png .

  6. If this account is not your primary account, deselect the Primary account checkbox.

  7. Choose a license assignment method.

  8. Select the Automatically invite user checkbox. This invites users to register with volume purchasing so you can assign books to them.
    This can be performed by either a pop-up on the device or by adding a Web Clip to the Home screen.

  9. Click Apply.

  10. Navigate to the Jamf School dashboard and click Synchronize Now to send the volume purchasing invitations to users.

The content is added to the Apps or Documents table in Jamf School.

Distributing Documents to a Single Device

After adding documents to Jamf School, you can distribute content to a single device.

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Devices > Inventory in the sidebar.

  2. Click the device you want to distribute the app to.

  3. Click the Documents tab.

  4. Click +Add documents.

  5. Click Add next to the document you want to install.

The document is installed immediately on the device.

Distributing Books and Documents to Groups

After adding the content to Jamf School, you can distribute books and documents to devices by scoping them to device groups. When the book or document is set to install automatically on devices in the device group, the content can be found on the Apple Books app. When the book or document is set to install on-demand, the content will be available to download from the Jamf School Student or Jamf Teacher apps.

Note: Once books are assigned to a Managed Apple ID, they cannot be reassigned. Books cannot be distributed with Apple School Manager because they can only be assigned to a user, not a device.

  1. In Jamf School, click Documents in the sidebar.

  2. Click Inventory.

  3. Select the checkboxes next to the books and documents you want to distribute.

  4. Click Edit Scope.

  5. Enter one or more device groups you want to distribute the content to in the Scope field.

  6. Choose one of the following installation methods from the Install Type pop-up menu:

    • Only PDF files and iBooks can be installed automatically. For these documents choose automatic installation

    • For all other file types, or to allow users to install the app or package themselves, choose on-demand installation.

  7. Click Save.

The book or document is available on the the devices the next time they check in with Jamf School.

Documents installed on a mobile device can be found in the following locations:

  • On-demand documents can be found in the Jamf Teacher app in My Resources > Documents.

  • Automatically installed documents can be found in Books > Library.

Documents installed on-demand on a computer can be found in the Jamf Teacher app in My Resources > Documents, or in Jamf School > Files. Automatically installed documents are unsupported on computers.
