Distributing Apps and Books Purchased with Apple School Manager

You can purchase apps and books in volume from Apple School Manager and distribute them by uploading a token to Jamf School.

Requirements

To distribute books purchased using Apple School Manager to users, users must have a personal or Managed Apple ID assigned to the location token uploaded to Jamf School.

Distributing Volume Purchased Content

Volume purchasing allows you to purchase apps and books in volume from Apple School Manager and distribute them by uploading a token to Jamf School. You must synchronize your volume purchasing account with Jamf School after purchasing or adding apps via volume purchasing. For more information on how to synchronize, see Synchronization.

Note: Once books are assigned to a Managed Apple ID, they cannot be reassigned. Books cannot be distributed with Apple School Manager because they can only be assigned to a user, not a device.

To distribute apps with Apple School Manager, you must first transfer app licenses to a location. For more information on transferring licenses to Apple School Manager, see the Apple School Manager User Guide. After assigning apps to a location, you can navigate to Settings > Apps and Books in Apple School Manager to download the location-based token.

Uploading the Location Token to Jamf School

Once you have downloaded the token from Apple School Manager, you can add apps and books to Jamf School by uploading the token to Jamf School.

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Organization > Settings in the sidebar.

  2. Select the Content (VPP) payload.

  3. Click Add VPP Account, and then upload the token you downloaded.

  4. Click Apply.

  5. (Optional) Click Edit images/download/thumbnails/79175942/Screen_Shot_2019-04-30_at_2.33.11_PM.png and edit the settings as needed:

    1. If this account is not your primary account, deselect the Primary account checkbox.

    2. Choose a license assignment method.

    3. To invite users to Apple School Manager when they enroll in Jamf School, select the Automatically invite user checkbox.
      This can be performed by either a pop-up on the device or by adding a Web Clip to the Home screen.

    4. Click Apply.

The app, book, or package is added to the Apps or Documents table in Jamf School.

Distributing Apps and Packages to Groups

After adding apps and packages to Jamf School, you can distribute content to devices by scoping it to device groups.

  1. In Jamf School, click Apps in the sidebar.

  2. Click Apps.

  3. Select the checkboxes next to the apps and packages you want to distribute.

  4. Click Edit Scope.

  5. Enter one or more device groups you want to distribute the content to in the Scope field.

  6. Choose one of the following installation methods from the Install Type pop-up menu:

    • To install the app or package on devices automatically, choose Change to automatic installation for all groups.

    • To allow users to install the app or package themselves, choose Change to on-demand installation for all groups.

  7. Choose the assignment method from the VPP Assign Method pop-up menu.

  8. Click Save.

The app or package is available on the devices the next time they check in with Jamf School.

Distributing Books and Documents to Groups

After adding the content to Jamf School, you can distribute books and documents to devices by scoping them to device groups. When the book or document is set to install automatically on devices in the device group, the content can be found on the Apple Books app. When the book or document is set to install on-demand, the content will be available to download from the Jamf School Student or Jamf School Teacher apps.   1. In Jamf School, click Documents in the sidebar.

  2. Click Documents.

  3. Select the checkboxes next to the books and documents you want to distribute.

  4. Click Edit Scope.

  5. Enter one or more device groups you want to distribute the content to in the Scope field.

  6. Choose one of the following installation methods from the Install Type pop-up menu:

    • To install the app or package on devices automatically, choose Change to automatic installation for all groups.

      Note: Only PDF files and iBooks can be installed automatically. All other file types must be distributed on-demand.

    • To allow users to install the app or package themselves, choose Change to on-demand installation for all groups.

  7. Choose the assignment method from the VPP Assign Method pop-up menu.

  8. Click Save.

The book or document is available on the the devices the next time they check in with Jamf School.
