To be able to use the Classroom app as a teacher, the classes must be defined. Classes in Jamf School are special types of user groups that contain teachers and students. To configure classes in Jamf School, you can create a new class or migrate an existing user group to a class.
The Classroom app on the teacher device
1:1 iPad with assigned teacher as owner
Teacher and student iPads with iOS 9.3 or later
Teacher and student iPads need to be on the same (Wi-Fi) network and need to be able to connect to each other directly. The communication between the Classroom app and the student iPad is done directly and securely, so Jamf School can’t detect what is being sent.
Bluetooth must be enabled on both iPads to detect each other, because iBeacons are used.
Both iPads require a special education profile. This is the responsibility of Jamf School and the configuration for that is explained in this guide. You can check if the iPads already have this profile on the ‘profiles’ tab of the device details page. Here it should display a profile named "Jamf School Education Profile (version:xxx)". This is required for both the teacher and student iPads.
Note: If there is a restriction in one of the active profiles that disables “Allow screen captures”, the screen sharing in the Classroom app will not work.
Migrating an Existing User Group to a Class
If you already have user groups configured for classes, you can easily migrate a group to a class by clicking Migrate to class on the group details page. This will also include any teachers that could manage this user group in the Jamf School Teacher app.
Installing the Classroom App on Teacher iPads
You can now install the Classroom app on the iPads that are associated with the teachers, either via the App Store or by adding this app in Jamf School. You can add the Classroom app when purchasing content in volume purchasing (formerly VPP) in Apple School Manager; this enables you to add the Classroom app automatically to all devices of the teachers.
You can check if the configuration of a class has been sent to the iPad by looking for an “Install Education Profile” command in the activity log.
If you have configured the class and device in the correct way, you will get an overview of the classes this teacher has been assigned to.
Note: If you have only a single class assigned to a teacher, you will go straight to the overview of that class.
