Assigning Apps to Users

You can distribute apps purchased through Apple School Manager to users using manage distribution. With managed distribution, users are invited to receive apps through their Apple ID. This license can be revoked at any time and transferred to another user.

Requirements

To distribute apps to users, you need:

  • Mobile devices with iOS 7 or later

  • A personal Apple ID assigned to each user.

    Note: The user must be signed in to the mobile device with their Apple ID to receive apps purchased through Apple School Manager.

  • A location-based token (VPP token) in Jamf School (For more information, see Integrating Jamf School with Apple School Manager.)

Inviting Users

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Users & Groups > Overview in the sidebar.

  2. Search for the user you want to invite to Apple School Manager.

  3. Click +Invite User.

  4. Click Send Invite to send the invite to the users e-mail address.

You can view the invitation status by navigating to Users & Groups > Overview. Users with a status of “Associated” have accepted the invitation and can receive app licenses.

Distributing Apps and Licenses to Users

Depending on the type of purchase, apps purchased through Apple School Manager automatically display in either Apps or Documents in the sidebar in Jamf School.

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Apps or Documents in the sidebar.

  2. Search for the app or book you want to distribute and click on the name.
    You can see how many licenses are purchased and how many are still available.

  3. Select the Auto-grant VPP licenses to users in scope and Auto-revoke VPP licenses from out-of-scope users checkboxes.

  4. Click + to add users to the scope.

  5. Click Save.

Revoking App Licenses

Revoking a Single License From a User

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to User & Groups > Overview in the sidebar.

  2. Search for the user that has the license you want to revoke and click on the name.

  3. Click VPP Licenses.

  4. Click Revoke license for the app you want to revoke the license from.

Revoking All Licenses From a User

Retiring a user account reclaims any assigned licenses and disassociates the account from your Apple School Manager account.

  1. In Jamf School, navigate to User & Groups > Overview in the sidebar.

  2. Search for the user that has the license you want to revoke and click on the name.

  3. Click Retire user in the VPP section.
