Restoring an iCloud Backup for iPad or iPhone

Requirements

Ensure you are restoring an iCloud backup from one device to a new device. Restoring the backup to the same device will cause enrollment with Jamf Now to fail.

  1. Log in to Jamf Now.
  2. Navigate to Auto-Enrollment, and then click View Devices. Verify the new device is listed.
  3. Navigate back to Auto-Enrollment, and then click Setup Steps. Verify the checkbox for Apps & Data is selected. This is required in order to restore to an iCloud backup during setup.
  4. Manually perform an iCloud backup on the original device and wait for it to completely sync.

For more information, see How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch from the Apple Support website.

  5. Turn on the new iPhone. If it is already at the Home screen, erase all content and settings from the device in one of the following ways:
    • Erase a managed device remotely by sending an Erase Device command.

    • Erase on the device by navigating to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone and tap Erase All Content and Settings.

For more information, see Erase all content and settings from iPhone from the Apple Support website.

  6. Complete the Setup Assistant on the reset device. The device must be set up as a new device during Setup Assistant.
  7. Tap Restore from iCloud Backup when the iPhone reaches the Apps & Data screen.
  8. Sign in to the Apple ID used to perform the iCloud backup on the original device.
  9. Proceed to Choose Backup, and then choose from a list of available backups in iCloud.
