Performing a DFU Restore on a Mobile Device

A device firmware update (DFU) restore should only be performed if you cannot restore your device using Jamf Now, within settings, or by plugging your device into a computer with iTunes. If none of the above restore methods are available or work, you should continue with the following steps.

Note:

There are different DFU processes for different device types. For more information on these processes, see If you can't update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch from the Apple Support website.

  1. Power off the device.
  2. Plug your mobile device in to a computer with iTunes installed and open iTunes.
  3. Press and hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for 8 seconds.
  4. Keep pressing down the Home button, but release the Sleep/Wake button after 8 seconds. Eventually, a message will pop up in iTunes saying, "iTunes has detected a device in recovery mode." Click OK.
  5. Let go of the Home button and click Restore in iTunes.
