Configuring Wi-Fi for macOS

This workflow details the best practices for deploying Wi-Fi configurations for macOS using a computer configuration profile. Configuration profiles are XML files (.mobileconfig) that provide an easy way to define settings and restrictions for macOS computers and users. It is recommended you create a configuration profile that allows computers to automatically join the wireless network. If you are using certificates, Simple Certificate Enrollment Protocol (SCEP), or Active Directory (AD), their respective payloads must be configured and deployed in the same configuration profile as the Wi-Fi payload. After configuring the profile, you can specify the computers and users to which the profile should be applied (called "scope").

Requirements

To configure Wi-Fi for macOS computers by using the instructions in this guide, you need a valid push certificate uploaded to Jamf Pro.

Configuring Wi-Fi for macOS Computers

You can configure Wi-Fi by deploying a computer configuration profile.

  1. Log in to Jamf Pro.

  2. Click Computers.

  3. Click Configuration Profiles.

  4. Click New images/download/thumbnails/18793743/Icon_New_Button.png .

  5. On the General pane, configure the following:

    1. Enter a display name.

    2. Select "Install Automatically" from the Distribution Method pop-up menu.

  6. To configure the Network payload, do the following:

    1. Select "Wi-Fi" from the Network Interface pop-up menu.

    2. Enter your SSID in the Service Set Identifier (SSID) field.

    3. Ensure the Auto Join checkbox is selected to allow computers to automatically join this wireless network.

    4. Select your wireless network security type from the Security Type pop-up menu.
If prompted, enter the password to your wireless network.
If your security type is an enterprise, select the checkboxes of the protocols you want to use.

  7. (Optional) If you are using certificates, SCEP, or AD, configure the Certificate, SCEP, or Directory payloads. For more information about how to configure the payloads, see Apple's Help documentation: https://help.apple.com/deployment/mdm/#/
Note: To allow users to log in to the wireless network without having to specify a certificate, the Certificate, SCEP, or AD payloads must be configured before deploying the configuration profile.

  8. Click the Scope tab to configure the scope.
For more information, see the Scope page in the Jamf Pro Administrator's Guide.

  9. Click Save.

The profile is deployed to macOS computers in the scope the next time they contact Jamf Pro.
