Configuring Wi-Fi for iOS

This workflow details the best practices for deploying Wi-Fi configurations for iOS using a mobile device configuration profile. Configuration profiles are XML files (.mobileconfig) that provide an easy way to define settings and restrictions for iOS devices and users. It is recommended you create a configuration profile that allows devices to automatically join the wireless network. If you are using certificates or Simple Certificate Enrollment Protocol (SCEP), their respective payloads must be configured and deployed in the same configuration profile as the Wi-Fi payload. After configuring the profile, you can specify the devices and users to which the profile should be applied (called "scope").

Configuring Wi-Fi for iOS Devices

You can configure Wi-Fi by deploying a mobile device configuration profile.

  1. Log in to Jamf Pro.

  2. Click Devices.

  3. Click Configuration Profiles.

  4. Click New images/download/thumbnails/18793730/Icon_New_Button.png .

  5. On the General pane, configure the following:

    1. Enter a display name.

    2. Select "Install Automatically" from the Distribution Method pop-up menu.

  6. To configure the WI-FI payload, do the following:

    1. Enter your SSID in the Service Set Identifier (SSID) field.

    2. Ensure the Auto Join checkbox is selected to allow devices to automatically join this wireless network.

    3. Select your wireless network security type from the Security Type pop-up menu.
If prompted, enter the password to your wireless network.
If using an enterprise security type, select the checkboxes of the protocols used by the network.

  7. (Optional) If you are using certificates or SCEP, configure the Certificate or SCEP payloads. For more information about how to configure the payloads, see Apple's Help documentation: https://help.apple.com/deployment/mdm/#/
Note: To allow users to log in to the wireless network without having to specify a certificate, the Certificate or SCEP payloads must be configured before deploying the configuration profile.

  8. Click the Scope tab to configure the scope.
For more information, see the Scope page in the Jamf Pro Administrator's Guide.

  9. Click Save.

The profile is deployed to iOS devices in the scope the next time they contact Jamf Pro.
