Classes

The JAMF Software Server (JSS) allows you to create classes for use with Apple’s Classroom app or the Casper Focus app. When you create a class in the JSS, you use a payload-based interface to configure settings to apply to teacher and student mobile devices. These settings are then applied to the devices in a class for both Apple’s Classroom app and Casper Focus.

The payloads you choose to configure for the class depend on if you plan to use Apple's Classroom app or Casper Focus, and if your environment uses Shared iPad. The following table explains the payloads you can configure in Classes:

Payload

Description

Applies to Classroom App

Applies to Casper Focus

General

This payload allows you to enter a display name for a class.

Meeting Times

This payload allows you to specify meeting times for a class (times/days that the class takes place). Specifying meeting times allows teachers to access the class in Casper Focus during the scheduled meeting times only.

Apple's Classroom App Class Configuration

When creating a class for Apple's Classroom app, you can configure settings for the following environments:

  • Environment with Shared iPad— In this environment, you add a student user group that contains students with Managed Apple IDs to a class. You also add a mobile device group that contains Shared iPad devices. You assign the teacher to an iPad in the JSS, and then add the teacher to the class (either as an individual user or as a user group).
In addition, you can include app usage restrictions and Home screen layout settings to customize the student experience on the iPad.

  • Environment without Shared iPad— In this environment, you assign each student to an iPad in the JSS. Then, you add the students (either as individual users or as a user group) to a class. You assign the teacher to an iPad in the JSS, and then add the teacher to the class (either as an individual user or as a user group).

Casper Focus Class Configuration

When creating a class for Casper Focus, you have two options for adding students, teachers, and devices to the class:

  • Users/user groups With this option, you assign students or teachers to devices in the JSS, and then add the students or teachers (either as individual users or as a user group) to a class.

  • Mobile device groupsWith this option, you assign students or teachers to devices in the JSS. Then, you add a smart or static mobile device group to a class that contains the devices that have the users assigned to them.
Note: To ensure that focus actions are not applied to the teacher device in a mobile device group in Casper Focus, the JSS ID of the teacher device must be excluded from Casper Focus commands using App Configuration. (For more information, see the App Configuration Settings for Casper Focus Knowledge Base article.)

Requirements

If you are creating a class to work with Apple's Classroom app, you need the following:

In addition, you must ensure that teacher and student iPads meet the minimum device requirements for use with Apple’s Classroom app. For more information about device requirements, see Apple's Classroom documentation:
https://help.apple.com/classroom/ipad/1.0/

If you are configuring a class to work with Casper Focus, see Casper Focus for a list of requirements.

Creating a Class

  1. Log in to the JSS with a web browser.

  2. Click Mobile Devices at the top of the page.

  3. Click Classes.
On a smartphone or iPod touch, this option is in the pop-up menu.

  4. Click New images/download/thumbnails/12323623/New_icon.png .

  5. Use the General payload to enter a display name for the class.

  6. Add students to the class using the Students payload or the Students User Groups payload.

  7. Add teachers to the class using the Teachers payload or the Teacher User Groups payload.

  8. Add mobile device groups to the class using the Mobile Device Groups payload.

  9. (Optional) If your environment uses Shared iPad, do the following:

    1. Use the App Usage Restrictions payload to restrict which apps are available to users on Shared iPad .

    2. Use the Home Screen Layout payload to configure the layout of the Dock and the pages on the iPad.

  10. (Optional) If your environment uses Casper Focus, do the following:

    1. Use the Apple TV payload to add targets to assign Apple TV devices to the class.

    2. Use the Meeting Times payload to specify the times and days the class meets.

  11. Click Save.

Cloning, Editing, or Deleting a Class

  1. Log in to the JSS with a web browser.

  2. Click Mobile Devices at the top of the page.

  3. Click Classes.
On a smartphone or iPod touch, this option is in the pop-up menu.

  4. Click the class you want to clone, edit, or delete.

  5. Do one of the following:

    • To clone the class, click Clone and make changes as needed. Then click Save.

    • To edit the class, click Edit and make changes as needed. Then click Save.

    • To delete the class, click Delete. Then click Delete again to confirm.

If your environment uses Apple's Classroom app, the clone, edit, or delete action is applied the next time iPads check in with the JSS.

If your environment uses Casper Focus, the clone, edit, or delete action is applied to Casper Focus the next time the app is opened or the Classes are refreshed in the sidebar.
